Asian held for stealing Dh450,000 from car

A 39-year-old Asian expatriate was arrested on Sunday for allegedly stealing Dh450,000 from the car of an Emirati when he entered a supermarket in Digdaga area here after parking the vehicle.

Lieutenant-Colonel Salem Sultan Al Darmaki, who heads the Investigation Section at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), said the suspect, identified as M.G.A. from an Asian country, was arrested from his house and Dh300,000 of the stolen money seized.

According to Al Darmaki, the Emirati man informed the police last Wednesday that the money was missing from the car when he returned from the supermarket.

During investigation, the police learnt that the suspect had followed the Emirati man from a bank at Nakheel after seeing the latter withdrawing the amount. The official said the suspect broke open the door of the car and stole the money after the Emirati had gone to the supermarket leaving the cash in the car.

Undercover agents saw a woman depositing Dh85,000 at one of the ATMs in Ras Al Khaimah and suspected her to be the wife of the suspect. They followed her up to her house.

Later, the police raided the apartment and searched the place after interrogating the man and his wife. As much as Dh300,000 was found hidden behind the television set, Al Darmaki said.

The officer added that the suspect confessed to stealing the money. He kept Dh300,000, which the police recovered, in the house while Dh85,000 had been deposited in the wife’s bank account. He spent the rest of the money.

The accused has been referred to the Public Prosecution. Source
