Zirconium broker faces trial before Dubai Court
Dubai prosecution has referred an Arab national to the Criminal Court to stand trial for allegedly brokering import of Zirconium into the country.
Zirconium, a lustrous, gray-white, strong transition metal is used in nuclear reactors, and has multiple uses. The import of mineral zircon is regulated by UAE's Federal Law No.12 (2007) which stipulates stringent control on the import of commodities of multiple uses.
Dubai's Attorney General Esam Al Humaidan said that the Prosecution has maintained utmost care at every step of investigation since issuing an order to arrest the accused and confiscate the consignment.
The accused and all the witnesses were interrogated with great care in an effort to reach the truth about the attempt, said a statement from Dubai Prosecution.
Al Humaidan added that the accused was found brokering with local traders for the import of 240kg of zirconium, which was meant to be re-exported to other destinations.
Zirconium, an alloying agent due to its high resistance to corrosion is also used in developing rocket systems.
The Attorney General noted that the foiling of the attempt by state security authorities stands testimony to the efforts of UAE in keeping the country free from weapons of mass destruction.
The import of materials with multiple-uses is not banned by UAE, but regulated by stringent rules to eliminate the chances of misusing them.
This is one of the major cases to be seen by a court in UAE pertaining to the violation of state security and the Federal Law No. 12(2007). (WAM)
