Abu Dhabi: When a group of heavily armed men barged into a jewellery shop in the Gold Centre on Wednesday at midnight, the security guards and staff had no choice but to surrender after the robbers took one of their colleagues hostage.
The panicked onlookers at the Madinat Zayed Shopping Complex contacted the police and a fully equipped police team responded.
The police team confronted the armed men and rescued the hostage immediately. The armed men were overpowered by the policemen and the staff were relieved that there were no casualties.
It was later revealed that the armed robbers were a group of policemen selected by Lieutenant General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior. The entire episode was a secret operation called 'Operation 24 Carat' to test the reaction capabilities of the Abu Dhabi police. Source
