Man jailed for faking marriage

The Federal Court of Appeal sentenced a UAE national to two months in jail and a foreign woman was ordered to be deported after the two were found guilty of involvement in a bogus marriage with the aim of securing legal residency for the woman.
The Naturalisation and Residency Department had referred the matter to the police alleging that the couple had faked their marriage after it was discovered that the woman was living at a different address with a colleague, and they both were working in a hotel in Abu Dhabi.
Police investigations revealed that the woman had entered the country on a housemaid’s visa. She worked as a housemaid for six months and later joined the hotel and ‘married’ the accused national, who obtained a residency visa for her.
However, the woman denied that the marriage was bogus and insisted that she lived with her husband for a period of six months and then got divorced, but did not cancel the residency visa.
The accused ‘husband’ also claimed that the marriage took place in Abu Dhabi, but it lasted only three months. The two had to part ways because he worked outside Abu Dhabi.
The Court of First Instance sentenced the man to two months in jail and ordered cancellation of the woman’s residency visa, followed by deportation.
The couple contested the judgement in the Court of Appeal, which upheld the lower court’s verdict. Source
