Prostitution racket busted, 200 held

Dubai Police arrested 190 Asian women suspected to be involved in prostitution and 10 Bangladeshi nationals, allegedly working as pimps, in one of the biggest crackdowns on sex trade networks in the emirate on Saturday, Khaleej Times has learnt.

Around 8pm, the police received a tip-off that a number of women were involved in sex trade in some small hotels in Naif area. The police officials raided a number of hotels in the area and arrested 10 suspected pimps from Bangladesh and 190 women from Bangladesh, India and Indonesia.

Dubai Police has had several crackdowns on prostitution networks in the past. Around three months ago, they arrested 170 sex workers, which, according to the police, was one of the largest crackdowns in Dubai.

The 190 women arrested on Saturday are being interrogated. After the investigations, they will be referred to the Dubai Public Prosecution.

Earlier, Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Commander-in-chief of the Dubai Police, had said that the police would continue its crackdown on prostitution rings. The move comes after the UAE passed a law to combat human trafficking. He urged women duped into working for such networks to contact the police.

The UAE enacted a law in November last year making human trafficking punishable by life imprisonment, and has set up a state body to combat trafficking. Source

A policeman who questioned one of the Russian women, identified as V.S., testified: "She confessed that the businessman brought her into Dubai on a visit visa after he promised her work as a waitress. She claimed that A.K. asked her to work as a prostitute for three months until she covered the value of her visa and air ticket. The policeman said they arrested T.M. who confirmed V.S.'s statement and A.K. who admitted that the Iranian ran the brothel. Police arrested the rest of the suspects later. Source

Man on trial for forcing girl into prostitution

A Bangladeshi national was charged with running a human trafficking and prostitution racket and forcing a 17-year-old girl from his country into prostitution. The case came before the Dubai Criminal Court recently.
The Public Prosecution accused M.A.A., 39, of bringing the girl to the UAE and forcing her into prostitution.
The victim testified before the court on Tuesday that she had arrived in the country on June 10 on a visit visa sent to her by M.A.A., whom she knew.

There were three other Bangladeshi women on the same flight she arrived in at Dubai International Airport. M.A.A. was at the airport to receive them. They were taken to a house in Al Hamriya area in Deira where they were told to stay till M.A.A. could arrange jobs for them.
The latter, however, threatened her and compelled her into prostitution, at least ‘temporarily’. The girl agreed but also planned her escape, which later she did.
One day, she was taken to the flat of a customer by a friend of M.A.A. in a cab. When the vehicle slowed down due to a traffic jam, she jumped out and ran to a grocery shop, she said. She sought help from the shopowner who immediately informed the police.
He was taken into police custody and the M.A.A. and his accomplice were arrested.
The court remanded the two in police custody. The hearing will continue in the month end. Source
